If there was ever a moment to snatch up a piece of history, it is now, because the long-time classic, Adidas Superstar Sneaker is now $50 cheaper, in the Women’s White/Gold Metallic design. These sneakers have a narrow fit, leather upper, moulded sock-liner, rubber cupsole, and a shell-toe. But, if you’re any level of connoisseur in the street, sneaker or Adidas game, then you already know! The Superstar design was first released back in 1969, and has continued to be an influence in modern sneaker culture. They’ve earned nicknames like “clam-tops,” “shell-tops,” and “shell shoes,” which may get you in the mood to wear them by the shore, but they were actually intended for b-ballers to sport on the court. Adidas had already made one attempt at revolutionising the on-court footwear industry with their Supergrip style in the mid-60’s, but it was the Superstars that won hearts; so much so that by 1973, 75% of US pro basketballers had traded in their Converse All Stars (no shade), for the adidas Superstars.  

If you’re less of a sports-nut and more of a music guru, then you may recognise the Superstar from their spotlight role in the hip-hop group, Run-DMC. During the burst of hip-hop in the mid-80’s, new-kids-on-the-block, Run-DMC, seemingly exclusively wore adidas shell-toes, in everything from black and white to white and blue. They added their own swag by wearing the shoes laceless with the tongues pushed out. The group were fans of adidas apparel too, and why wouldn’t they be?! Run-DMC even dedicated a song to the legendary brand, “My adidas.” Telling of the group’s influence, they asked fans mid-performance to hold up their adidas, and around 40,000 attendees proudly lifted up their Superstars! Of course, adidas were hooked and signed a deal with Run-DMC ASAP. This became the first endorsement deal between a major corporation and a hip-hop artist.
